Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – “Home” – Track Review

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Band or commune?

In economics I was learning about diminishing marginal product. Basically when you hire so many people that the next person you hire doesn’t really help out your business. They just get in the way. Seems kind of like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are bordering on this point. Feels like there are 85 people in this band, one of which is probably the only attractive accordion player on the planet. Aside from the hawtness of the accordion broad, I’m not really sure what most of these characters add to the band. How do they split all the moneyz? Pointy Ed and company seem kind of like a bunch of escapees from burning man or a commune. Probably the type of people that are definitely down to chill but also are probably a bit on the stinky side. Anywayz, I heard this song by them called “home”. It’s kind of like “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” soundtrack meets the Avett brothers meets “I got you babe”. I dig it.

I think I strongly prefer this Letterman performance to other versions of the song. Seems like the two singers legit love each other or something (not sure if this is true). Maybe I just h8 Jay Leno so much that I instinctively am loving this. Feel like the girl singer might be super high during this performance. Did feel a little distracted by the accordion girl though. Not sure what the aesthetic of this band is supposed to be. Seems like everyone is going for their own hipster/bohemian look and it kind of looks like the best thrift store ever vomited all over them. I feel like the vegan ratio is probably pretty high in this band.

Overall, the song is fun, lively, charming and really different than anything that I have heard lately. In an era of ‘freak folk’, ‘art rock’ and ‘noise pop’, I really appreciate the straightforward quirky nature of this tune.

Is ‘Spaghetti Western – Fi’ the next big thing in Brooklyn?
How many band members is too many?
Do you prefer hipsters or hippies?
How much dick does Jay Leno suck?

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home – 5 out of 5.
