Aging in Reverse – Retro vs Unoriginal

Lately it seems like a lot of the music that has been comin’ out is ‘retro’ inspired. It’s not like this is true in just one genre either. Seems like every type of music is now channeling a particular niche from a particular time. Thinkin’ that very few bands seem to have a ‘new’ sound.

One major group of retroish artists that seems to be getting internet hype right now are these ‘noise-pop’ bands that are getting tons of hits on ‘Gorilla Vs Bear’. I have admittedly been enjoying these bands a lot but they do just sound like a rougher version of stuff that was probably crazy popular in the early sixties. Overall seems like ‘doo-wop’ is huge right now. It doesn’t even matter which level of ‘alt’ you are. From full blown hipster to intro-level there is something for you that will make you want to go to a sock-hop and then ‘neck’ with some girl at drive-in.

The Sandwitches even kind of have that 50's house wife asthetic.

R&B seems to be experiencin’ a bit of a retro trend as well. Kind of going back to the days of ‘The Temptations’ and other family friendly Motown type sounds. Could be a nice alternative from the borderline porn-music of R-Kelly.

Mayer Hawthorne - Retro/mickey mouse R&B at its finest.

Garage rock is maybe the most obvious/oldest retro movement that is popular right now. Basically young kids singing sloppy, 2 minute, 60’s style psychedelic rock songs about girls, booze and parties.

The strangest retro trend to me is probably this whole “Beach Boyz” thing. Feel like some of this music is least original sounding. Seems very ‘ripped off’. Something extra creepy about these Beach Boys wannabes that rubs me the wrong way.

The Magic Kids - Cute or Cult?

‘ChillWave’ is probably one of the most popular types of movements in indie music these days. Still havin’ a hard time fully understanding what makes a song ‘chill wave’ is but I know all this stuff has a clear 80’s electronic influence. Usually very ‘synthy’ and mellow.

The 80’s seem to be the new 70’s and the 90’s are the new 80’s. Feel like the period of time it is taking for something to become retro is shrinking. Considering throwing a 2005 themed party next week. Figure we can just jam out to an ironic retro mix featuring Kanye’s ‘Gold Digger’ or some Franz Ferdinand, while wearing ‘UGG’ boots and Crocs.

Is new music really new music?
Who would be on your 2005 mix?
Which retro type genre is the most authentic?
How creepy are the Magic Kids?
