Album Reviews (Super Quickies) : Black Angels, Japandroids, Twin Shadow

Phosphene Dream by Black Angels

If you like your rock psychedelic and relatively heavy and dark, then this is your shit. Seems like a really good album for some overdose scene in a movie not that unlike “Blow”. Also good for driving around and mean muggin’. ‘Bad Vibrations’ sounds like it could be the entrance song for some bad guy in professional wrestling, and I mean that as a compliment. Anyways, good album, even though it kind of lost some steam in the middle. Why do I now have an inexplicable urge to watch “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”?

No Singles by Japandroids

As someone who loved “Post-Nothing”. “No Singles” was pretty dissappointing. Try to imagine the pure volume of the last “Sleigh Bells” album without any hooks or redeeming qualities, then you might begin to understand what this album is like without having to sit through it. Just really glad that this is just a collection of unreleased stuff and not a real record. I guess the song ‘Press Corps’ wasn’t bad though.

Forget by Twin Shadow

This is some really well executed New(er) Wave. The song ‘Slow’ is perfect and almost overshadows the rest of what is still a really good album, that essentially just sounds like it was some never released “Smiths” record. I feel like other recent artists have given nods to this genre (New Theory, Summer Camp etc) but no one has been so literal with their inspiration until now. I guess the major concerns on this one are the lack of originality, and whether or not you like New Wave as a genre.

One of my fave videos of the year.
