Shittiest Year? – MGMT or MIA?

Feelin’ like both MGMT and MIA had really rough 2k10’s. Especially since both seemed crazy awesome before this year. Not really surprised MIA had a bad year. Kind of already knew that she was completely capable of creating some really avant garde shit that no one would like in 2k10. Just felt like she would have to make some border line unlistenable ‘art’ album in response to the super accessible ‘Kala’, to prove that she was still ‘mad alt’ and that you weren’t ‘cool’ enough to really ‘get’ her ‘music’.

I was more shocked by MGMT. Kind of thought they would’ve continued making really fun pop songs for tween girls (and I) to eat up. Apparently though they got as sick of playing ‘Kids’ as a lot of people did of hearing it. Feel like their album “Congratulations” was the anti-‘Kids’ record. With “Congratulations” MGMT really did a stellar job of avoiding being catchy, fun and enjoyable. Probably didn’t want to be pinned into that role of being artists that people ‘like’.

Been tryin’ to figure out who sucked harder in 2k10…

ALBUM

MGMT – “Congratulations”  was just kind of like a really amateurish attempt at being artsy. It felt like they wanted to be edgier and sort of misunderstood but didnt know how to do it. Nothing on the album fell into the “holy shit this is needs to be turned off now” category, but it was just a lot of  heavy handed wannabe art rock, that was uninteresting at best.

MIA – /\/\/\Y/\” definitely had quite a few “unlistenable” tracks. I’m talking stuff that legitimately hurt my ears. But XXXO was actually really good, especially the remix with Jay-Z. And, “it takes muscle” wasn’t half bad either in a Gwen Stefani reggae type of way.

Verdict: MGMT was suckier.

Music Videos

MGMT:   Well, these made no sense. But they were cool.

MIA: MIA’s featured unnecessary old people sex and probably had a ridiculous political message. But ginger explosions were hilarious.

Verdict: Realistically, both made surprisingly cool music videos for what were some pretty bad songs.   So the verdict is a DRAW.

LATE NIGHT APPEARANCES:

MGMT – Typical underwhelming, uninspired and hardly audible  live performance by MGMT on Kimmel.

MIA This was just one of the worst things. I am not sure I know who this performance was meant for but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the same crowd that watches Letterman. Yikes.

Verdict: MIA was suckier.

TOURING:

MGMT: Apparently they opted to not play “Kids” at Coachella. “Kids” is one of Rolling Stones’ top 100 songs of the DECADE, the song that got the band famous, and one of a handful of songs that the majority of festival goers overpaid to hear them play. Stay classy MGMT. I’m sure people were really excited to hear “it’s working” though...

MIA: As far as I know nothing spectacularly bad happened on MIA’s tour this year.  I believe she played all her hits, which probably made the Letterman like moments easier to deal with.

Verdict: MGMT was suckier.

ALBUM ART:

MGMT:

Really not that bad, but kind of dumb and really misleading. Looks like something “Chromeo” might use.

MIA: Sadly this is a pretty accurate description of the album it was the cover for. A bit of a clusterfuck.

Verdict: MIA was suckier.

Public Statements:

MGMT: “When we first wrote that song, we were laughing so hard. Andrew [VanWyngarden] just reminded me of that, that we thought it was the funniest thing we’d ever heard. And then we got used to it, it started to sound more normal. It’s not a single, but we thought it was a good way to entice people to listen to the whole record. I’m sure there are plenty of people who think it’s completely weird and not what they were expecting. I’m sorry.”

Rule of thumb: apologizing for your song being stupid never looks good.

MIA: “I find the new Justin Bieber video more violent and more of an assault to my eyes and senses than what I’ve made,” – Said to UK weekly in response to criticisms of her “Born Free” Music Video.

“there’s Lady Gaga — people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same! None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I f—ing do! That’s a talent and she’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making itself important — saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums’ Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself.”  – in an interview with NME.

Pretty mean spirited, but pretty hilarious.

Verdict: If nothing else, MIA’s comments were more ‘rock n’ roll’ than MGMT’s. MGMT was suckier.

There you have it. MGMT suckier than MIA in 2k10 by a score of 3-2-1.

Who do you think was the suckiest in 2k10?

Was it someone other than these two options?

Is MIA racist against gingers and Gagas?

Did y’all forget just how crazy MIA is?

Are people that claim to like “Congratulations” just with MGMT for the long haul?

Are they idiots?

Does MGMT’s album have the most out of proportion ratio of cool videos to cool songs ever?

Was appearing on “/\/\/\Y/\” a super risky career move by Jay-Z?

Is it better to be progressive or timeless?

Does anyone take offense to Bieber bashing?

Would an MGMT / MIA collaboration kick or suck ass?

Was dried out desert bird thing a metaphor for MGMT’s career?

Did people in the Letterman audience cry during “Born Free”?

Will/should MIA ever be allowed on network TV again?

Who sucked harder?
