Album Review: The Weeknd – House of Balloons

House of Balloons by The Weeknd

R&B is something that rarely weasels its way onto my blog, but this mysterious album by “The Weeknd” (whoever he is) is pretty interesting. I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to anything ‘indie’ that is this sexually charged. Seriously this stuff might make Prince blush.

I think you lost morals, girl

(What?)

But it’s okay

cause you don’t need em where we’re going

in that two floor loft in the middle of city

It’s kind of like if you asked James Blake to make porn music. The one artist that I am continually reminded of while listening to this album is ‘The-Dream’. I guess that”s just because “House of Balloons” is so unapologetically ‘sex music’. The one difference is that ‘The Weeknd’ seems easier to take seriously. Also, it has  distinct semi-dubstep feel to it. Even for someone who doesn’t claim to know anything about (or typically like) R&B, there are a couple killer jams here.
